### Meet Ruby: A Special Golden Retriever with a Heart of Gold
Ruby is a one-year-old golden retriever who has already touched many hearts. Her journey began last summer in Québec when she was lovingly left at the SPCA Roussillon shelter. Ruby's bright and cheerful nature quickly stood out, leading her to an exciting new path.
A New Beginning
Recognizing her potential, the shelter recommended Ruby to the Asista Foundation. This wonderful organization trains rescue dogs to be service animals, bringing comfort and joy to adults and children dealing with mental health challenges. Ruby is now on her way to becoming one of the first dogs in Asista's new Facility Service Dog Program.
Starry-Eyed Days
Ruby's adventure took a delightful turn when Nick Suzuki, captain of the Montreal Canadiens, and his fiancée, Caitlin Fitzgerald, decided to foster her. Fitzgerald shared with People Magazine, "In just a few days, Ruby felt like she had been part of our family forever. We could see she was not only perfect for service work but also a deeply loving friend."
Training for a Life of Love
After her time with Suzuki and Fitzgerald, Ruby joined another caring foster family. She then began specialized training with Asista's wonderful team. This training helps her learn to stay calm in busy places, understand people's emotions, and master up to 15 tasks to help in times of need.
As her journey progressed, Fitzgerald and Suzuki realized fate had drawn them to Ruby. “We never planned to adopt, but Ruby had different plans for us,” Fitzgerald admitted. Now, Fitzgerald, who is a social worker, will pair professionally with Ruby as her partner.
A Perfect Match
Ruby’s training is going extremely well. Fitzgerald has shared that Ruby's eagerness to learn feels almost magical. Ruby’s ability to cheer people up makes her the perfect pick for this important work. Golden retrievers like Ruby are known for their gentle nature, so it looks like Asista made a wonderful choice.
Ruby’s story is a beautiful reminder of how pets can change our lives for the better. If you have a pet, take a moment today to appreciate the love they bring. And if you’re thinking about adopting, remember there’s a Ruby out there waiting to find a place in your home and your heart.
