Valerie, the little dachshund with a big adventure, has finally come home after 529 days on her own. The caring team at Kangala Wildlife Rescue happily shared the news on social media that Valerie is safe and sound, munching on some delicious roast chicken as she prepares for a warm reunion with her loving humans, Georgia Gardner and Josh Fishlock.

A Brave Heart on Kangaroo Island

Back in November 2023, Valerie went missing during a vacation with Georgia and Josh on the beautiful Kangaroo Island. While they were out fishing, Valerie made a bold escape from her playpen, darting under a car and then disappearing into the wild. Although many tried to find her, even Georgia and Josh had to return to their everyday lives, leaving behind their hopes and the volunteers who would continue to search.

A Lone Adventurer

For more than a year, Valerie roamed the island, surviving on water from the land and whatever bits of food she could find, keeping away from dangers like snakes. Video footage showed she was sticking close by, just 10 miles from where she’d initially disappeared.

A Community's Unwavering Effort

Her rescue was a testament to love and teamwork. Volunteers dedicated over 1,000 hours and journeyed about 3,100 miles, setting up cameras and traps to finally catch this adventurous pup.

A Happy Ending

When Valerie was finally found, it seemed she hadn't forgotten humans at all. Her first meal back with the rescue team was filled with joy, as she barked and playfully communicated with them. Roast chicken and her favorite dog food made her feel at home again, and soon she'll be back in the arms of Georgia and Josh, who have missed her so much.

A Call to Care

Valerie’s story is a beautiful reminder of how strong the bond between pets and their owners can be. If you have room in your heart and home, consider adopting a pet and sharing your life with a furry friend. They bring endless joy and love to our lives.
